Try the activity
Choose a page and look closely
The doctor holds a clipboard, the nurse carries a tray, and the firefighter holds a rolled hose. The teacher shares a picture book, the chef stirs a bowl, and the police officer raises a hand beside a traffic cone. Find one object before you begin coloring.
Talk about each helper
What might the doctor write on the clipboard? Why might the nurse keep supplies together on a tray? What does the firefighter wear? What story could the teacher be reading? What could the chef be mixing? What might the officer’s raised hand tell road users? There is no need to write answers.
Share a neighborhood story
Take turns showing a picture and saying one way that person could help in a neighborhood. Imagine a school, kitchen or clinic on scrap paper and place a coloring page beside it. Keep this a drawing and conversation activity; children do not need real tools or equipment.
Keep your favorite pages together
Add the six pictures to your print list, then remove any you do not need or change their order. You can print the list or download its PDF. The optional cover adds one page before the coloring pictures; with all six selected, that makes seven pages.
Another idea
Invite each child to invent a question for a helper. Children may describe a picture, point to an object or draw their idea instead of speaking to the whole group.
