Choosing Colors for a Coloring Page

By ColorWillowPublished

There is no single correct palette. A blue cat or a rainbow dinosaur can be part of the fun. These small starting ideas help when a blank page feels like too many choices.

What you will need

  • A printed coloring page
  • Three or four crayons or colored pencils
  • A small piece of scrap paper

Start with three colors

Pick a favorite color, a second color for smaller details and one light color for a background or pattern. Put the other colors aside for now. You can bring them back whenever you want.

Make a tiny test strip

Draw a small patch with each color on scrap paper. Try light pressure and then another gentle layer. The mark on paper may look different from the pencil barrel or wrapper.

Repeat a color to connect the picture

Use the same color in a few places: flower petals and a pot decoration, or a dinosaur’s spots and a border you draw yourself. Repeating colors is an option, not a rule.

Choose a mood or invent a story

Try sunny yellows and oranges for a warm scene, or blues and greens for an underwater picture. Ask what is happening in the drawing and choose colors that fit that story. Leave white areas wherever you like.
