Mosaic Coloring: Find the Outline and the Pieces

An apple, an open-winged butterfly and a three-towered castle are divided into outlined pieces. Try following the outside of a fruit, wing or roof, then look at the lines inside it. You can start with just one sheet and color a small part.

Try the activity

  1. Choose the spaces you want to color

The apple and butterfly have broad pieces; the castle has more closely divided sections and small windows. Open the picture-selection window with the activity button. All three start checked: uncheck any you do not want, then confirm with “Add selected pages”. You can remove more pictures in the print list. An optional cover adds one page. Tiny spaces can stay white.

  2. Follow the outside, then look inside

With your finger, follow the outside of the apple fruit, one butterfly wing or a castle roof. Then point to a line that splits that same part into smaller pieces. Notice which line belongs to the whole shape and which is inside it.

  3. Group pieces with one color

On the apple, use one color in several fruit pieces and another in a leaf. On the butterfly, use one color in several pieces of one upper wing. On the castle, use one color in a roof and another in a few wall pieces. Follow the example for your chosen picture; you can leave the rest for later.

  4. Show a shape and one of its pieces

Point to the fruit, wing or roof you colored, then to one smaller piece inside it. Find its outside edge and an inside dividing line again. Continue with the same color or choose a different color for a nearby piece; there is no fixed color answer.

Another idea

If you want a second try, use different colors in a few neighboring pieces elsewhere on the same sheet. Point to the outer shape and the smaller pieces in both areas. Keep the page whole; this is coloring on paper, not a cutting pattern or a numbered puzzle.
