Solar System Coloring Activity: Match the Planet Pictures

Look for the land shapes on Earth, the bands and wide slanting rings on Saturn, and the plain disk with a narrow, steeply tilted ring on Uranus. Find those same drawing features in the four-row planet picture. These unlabelled illustrations simplify the bodies; drawn sizes, distances and proportions are not measurements of the real Solar System.

  1. Keep a pair of pictures

Open the picture chooser. All four pictures are selected at first. For a pair, untick two single-planet pictures and keep the eight-planet picture with Earth, Saturn or Uranus. Click “Add selected pages” to confirm. You can adjust the print list later, then print it or download its PDF. These four pictures alone use four pages; a pair uses two. An optional cover adds one page.

  2. Find a clue on the single picture

Read the page description with a grown-up to check the planet’s name. On Earth, point to an irregular land shape. On Saturn, follow a curved band and the wide slanting rings. On Uranus, find the plain disk and the narrow, steeply tilted ring. Look at whichever single picture you chose.

  3. Find its partner in the group

On the eight-planet sheet, look through the four rows below the small Sun symbol, from left to right. Find a picture with the same land shapes, bands or ring arrangement as your single picture. Point to a feature on both sheets. The group draws it smaller; that difference is about these pictures, not the planet’s actual size.

  4. Carry a color across the two drawings

Test two or three colors on scrap paper. Use one color for a chosen land shape, band or ring on the single picture, then find that part on the group picture and use it again. Narrow ring spaces can stay white. Put the whole sheets side by side and show where you repeated a color; finishing every part is optional.

Another idea

Keep the group picture and try a different single planet. Find its matching features before coloring, then change the way you arrange the same colors. One pair is enough for a short activity; no cutting or extra labels are needed.
