Science Picture Activity: Notice and Ask

A picture can start a science question without answering it. These four pages show people looking at an acorn or plants, and an acorn sprouting. Point out what is drawn, then separate your own question from what the drawing actually shows.

Try the activity

  1. Keep one picture

Open the picture chooser. The four pictures start selected; untick three to keep the page you want. Confirm the selection, check your print list, then print it on A4 or Letter paper or download the list as a PDF. One chosen picture uses one page; an optional cover adds another.

  2. Record a visible clue

Draw three boxes on your blank sheet. In the first, “I can see”, draw or write one detail: the acorn near the magnifying glass, the sprout above the split acorn, the leaf book and potted plant, or the magnifying glass beside a garden leaf. Color that detail on your chosen page. Write what is shown, not a guess about what happened before.

  3. Ask something the picture does not answer

Use the second box, “I wonder”, for your own question. For the sprouting acorn, you might ask what is under the soil. For a magnifying-glass scene, you might ask what you could see on a real leaf. The drawing alone does not settle the answer. You may draw the question and ask a grown-up to add your words.

  4. Choose a next check

In the third box, “I could check”, draw or write one next step: find a book with a grown-up or look at a nearby plant together. Keep the three-box sheet beside your coloring page and show the detail that led to your question. You do not need to finish coloring every part or find an answer today.

Another idea

Try the same notes format with another picture. Keep the new visible detail and question separate, even when the pictures show similar plants. The finished result is a coloring page and your own question notes, not a test with a single answer.
