Colored Pencil Coloring for Beginners
By ColorWillowPublished
You do not need a large pencil set to begin. A few colors, ordinary paper and a light touch are enough to explore how pencil marks build up.
What you will need
- Colored pencils
- A printed coloring page and scrap paper
- A pencil sharpener, with adult help when needed
Start gently
Make a pale first layer with small overlapping strokes. Try tiny circles or short lines and compare them on scrap paper. Gentle pressure leaves room to add more layers later.
Build one area at a time
Choose a leaf, petal or other small part of the picture. Add a second light layer where you want a stronger color. Avoid pushing hard just to remove every white fleck; the paper’s texture can remain visible.
Try two colors together
On scrap paper, put a light yellow layer over a small blue patch, then try the reverse order beside it. Different pencils and papers give different results. Use a combination you like in the picture.
Keep some light areas
Leave part of a shape pale or white if you want it to look brighter. You can also use flat, even colors throughout. Blending and shading are optional experiments, not requirements for a good picture.
