Make a Folded Farm Picture Book

By ColorWillow

One fold makes four page faces: a front cover, two inside pages and a back cover. Color and cut the numbered panels, then glue them into the folded book in reading order.

Print the project sheets

Choose the paper size loaded in your printer. Print at actual size (100%) so the pieces match the measurements in this guide.

A folded paper farm book with the goat on the left inside page and the hen on the right, plus its cow front cover.
Illustrated example using the three pages linked below. The order is cow front cover, goat inside left, hen inside right and a blank back cover.

Friendly Goat Facing Forward

Friendly Hen

Check the four-page order

Page order: closed front cover 1, open inside pages 2 on the left and 3 on the right, then back cover 4.
Fold the blank sheet first. Put the cow on 1, the goat on 2, the hen on 3 and your own ending on 4. This diagram shows page order, not a sheet for double-sided printing.

What you will need

  • The farm picture panels craft sheet, printed on matching A4 or US Letter paper
  • One extra blank sheet in the same paper size
  • Colored pencils or crayons, a ruler and a glue stick
  • Child-appropriate scissors with adult help

Print and color the panels

Print the craft sheet at 100% or Actual size on the matching paper size. Check its 50 mm line with a ruler. Color panel 1 with the cow, panel 2 with the goat and panel 3 with the hen. Leave panel 4 for your own drawing or ending.

Make one fold in a blank sheet

Put the extra blank sheet sideways, with its long edge across the table. Bring the left short edge across to meet the right short edge and press the fold. Turn the folded sheet so the fold is on the left and the open edges are on the right, like a book. Do not cut the folded sheet.

Check the four page faces

Keep the book closed: the face you see is page 1, the front cover. Open it: the inside left face is page 2 and the inside right face is page 3. Close the book and turn it over: the back cover is page 4. Lightly mark these numbers before adding the pictures.

Cut and arrange the panels

Ask an adult to help cut the four outside dashed rectangles. Each panel is 8.4 by 12 cm. With the book folded and numbered, place panel 1 on page 1, panel 2 on page 2, panel 3 on page 3 and panel 4 on the back cover. Keep the printed numbers at the bottom and every panel clear of the fold.

Glue one page at a time

Check the order before gluing. Glue the back of each panel onto its matching page and smooth it flat. Open the book and let the glue dry before closing it. The finished book is about 14.9 by 21 cm on A4, or 14 by 21.6 cm on US Letter.

Add your own farm story

Give the cover a title. On the next pages, say or write what the goat and hen do. Draw an ending on the blank back panel. The pictures do not contain a fixed story: you can point, speak or add your own words.
