Leaves, stems and folded front legs

These 15 pictures include the broad leaf, upright leaf, diagonal grass stem, small twig, three flowers and leafy garden, alongside a branch fork, two separate leaves, a curled grass leaf, a rounded stone and a feather-shaped leaf. One picture has two mantises on separate branches; most focus on one insect with folded front legs and a long wing-covered body.

For fewer background shapes, try the broad leaf, short twig or rounded stone. The upright and feather-shaped leaves add vein divisions or repeating leaflets; flowers and layered rain-line leaves offer more areas around the insect. Choose by background and viewing angle, rather than treating these stylized pictures as anatomical diagrams.

Try it together

Print a leaf page and a stone or garden page. Reuse the same body colors, then give each background its own palette. Compare the long antennae and folded front legs in the different poses. For a pair of insects, choose the two-branch picture and use a different body color for each.
